We would like to present to you Slaviša Bradić, the principal coach of the Judo club Rijeka, with his popular nickname Brada. He is, at the same time, the chief secretary of the Rijeka Sport Union. He graduated sports science from the Cambridge university, and his PhD thesis dealt with judo in schools – the influence of judo on the development of psychological abilities, and the development of morals. Note the following – Bradić’s thesis started with the original idea of the founder of judo, professor Jigoro Kano, that one practises mental abilities except those merely physical by practising judo, and thus becomes a better person, as well as a better member of the community. “In each sport there is a moral code, and we possess no proof that judo develops morals. But, something entirely different is key in judo – strict adherence to rules, maximum self control of emotions, aggression and acceptance of defeat. In football, everybody jumps at the referee on account of the yellow card, because they do not accept defeat, and this is unthinkable in judo“, Bradić laughs. He is currently working on a monograph of the Judo club Rijeka, for this year is the 60th anniversary of judo in Rijeka – and this makes a significant part of the history of judo in Croatia – and somebody must put this on paper for the next generations of judo contestants, so Brada took on this demanding task too. It is to his credit that, through the project “Judo in Schools,“ judo was accepted into the system of school sports in 2013, and #CroatianJudoUnion – in 2015 – received the award from the #InternationalOlympicCommittee for the innovation. In 2018, judo was introduced in many schools in Zagreb, Osijek and Vinkovci, and as many as 17 primary schools in Rijeka today have judo as a sports activity during the extended day care. He developed this through the project #RIMove – the sports school of the City of Rijeka. Within the project, programmes for primary school pupils in grades 1 through 4 are being implemented in athletics, gymnastics and judo. The programmes encompass learning of fundamental skills that impact the physical and psycho-social development of children and the promotion of physical activity and healthy life styles. Thanks to Slaviša Bradić, the JC Rijeka are also implementing inclusive activities through the project JudoIN which is financed by the European Social Fund. “We have furthermore met with children with developmental difficulties in schools and we did not pretend not to see them. And since I am interested in all segments of judo, I have decided to bring judo to these children as well. Each judo element, technique and principle are quite simple adapted to each human constitution. What differs are the goals and the method“, Bradić says. He is emphasising that JC Rijeka invest a lot in the professional work of the club. “All our judo coaches have graduated from faculties of physical education, or from higher schools for coaches, and are furthering their development at various academies and this is paid for by the club. The professional ability comes before the conditions for training, the knowledge is most important, for if one knows to show how to train, attendees can also practise in lesser conditions“, Bradić stresses. He developed a very good cooperation with the world centre of judo in the renowned Japan’s Kodokan, and, each year, the judo contestants from JC Rijeka go to Japan. “Everybody from Rijeka who wins a state medal, judo champions, get a free trip to Japan, to Tokyo, as well as a tourist excursion – climbing the holy Japan’s volcano Fuji mountain. “We stay there for about ten days and train in Kodokan with Japanese masters of judo who are there just for us, and we meet there teams from all over the world“, Bradić, the popular Sensei Brada, told us.
